Induction Training

We do not expect you to be an expert when you are appointed.

There is a lot to learn, and we want to make sure you have the support you need to get started with confidence.

Here to support every step of the way

As part of your induction, you will:
  • Have a one-to-one session with the Head of Governance or Clerking and Compliance Manager
  • Be registered on GovernorHub, where meeting papers, visit records and governance resources are stored
  • Receive access to the National Governance Association (NGA) website and its Learning Link e-learning platform
  • Receive a copy of the Trust Governance Code of Conduct and Scheme of Delegation
  • Complete a DBS check
  • Be invited to visit your school and meet the Headteacher and key staff

NGA Core Modules

All new governors and trustees are asked to complete the NGA Learning Link core modules as a starting point. These eight modules cover the key areas of governance:

  1. Your role, your responsibilities, your organisation
  2. Understanding school structures and what children should learn
  3. Living your values, reaching your vision, managing risk
  4. Using data to improve educational outcomes
  5. Making the most of what you have got
  6. Building the team and improving the organisation
  7. Assuring your organisation, keeping it safe, secure and solvent
  8. Governance making an impact, changing lives

Safeguarding Refresher

All governance volunteers are asked to refresh their safeguarding training each year. Courses are available via NGA Learning Link or TES Develop, for which you will receive login details as part of your induction.

Ongoing Development

Good governance is built over time. As you become more familiar with your school and your role, there are a range of ways to deepen your knowledge and develop your skills.

All TCSET governance volunteers are members of the NGA, giving you access to over 40 online learning modules, guidance documents and a wide range of resources.

In-House Training

We run in-house training sessions throughout the year, including:
  • Governance at TCSET
  • Understanding school finance and financial reporting
  • Interpreting school leadership reports
  • The role of the link governor
  • Ofsted preparation

Details and dates are shared via GovernorHub. Additional sessions are arranged throughout the year to address topical issues as they arise. If a specific training need is identified at your school, the Trust can arrange tailored support.

Training Pathway

We broadly think about governor development in three stages:

01

New to the role

Complete your NGA induction modules, visit the school and trust websites, read the latest Ofsted report, and attend your induction session with the Governance Team.

02

Developing

Attend TCSET in-house training sessions, complete further NGA and recommended online modules, shadow another governor on a link visit, and begin to consider a link role.

03

Experienced

Continue to develop expertise in specific areas such as safeguarding, SEND or Pupil Premium. Consider taking on the role of Chair or Vice Chair and participating in the Chairs leadership programme and forum.

Available Training

All training is free to governance volunteers.
